When you hear the term Pharmacology, what comes to your mind? For many, the word pharmacology means just the basic field of medicine. For others, it is a subject that is quite complex. What is more, not everyone understands what is actually involved in this world of drug discovery and development. Whether it is the latest new drugs that are being produced or just the ingredients found in natural products that can be used as ingredients for medicine, the study of these things is called pharmacology.
One of the most interesting aspects of this entire subject is that pharmacology can be applied to other sciences as well. This is very important when you consider that the body is a highly interrelated system of itself. However, these definitions do not appear to agree on what the word “pharmaceutical” actually means. When you look at the actual meaning of the word, it appears that pharmacology refers more to the process by which a substance is created than it does to the actual medicine itself. And the word “natural” may be used in conjunction with pharmaceutical in order to describe any product made from natural products, regardless of how they were created or what part of nature created them.
The pharmaceutical term was probably first applied to describe natural products created specifically to treat, prevent, or cure a disease. These “natural” products were not pharmaceuticals per se because they did not include pharmaceutical ingredients. These substances were usually herbs, foods, and other natural products that were used in the treatment of the disease or condition being treated. These products were considered to be pharmaceuticals because they had the potential to treat, prevent, or heal the disease.
Today, the term pharmaceuticals has become used widely in the pharmaceutical industry to describe the drugs, medicines, and other pharmaceutical products that are used in hospitals, doctors offices, pharmaceutical research and development facilities, and other places of medical care. Basically, anything that is used in a health care environment is going to be considered a pharmaceutical, even if it is not a “natural” product. This is one reason why people are often confused about what the word pharmacology means. It can also lead people to wonder about what medicines, treatments, and procedures are part of the pharmaceutical industry and therefore why we have all these different terms and words when they could be described in just one way or another.
