Why Is Motivation in the Workplace Important?

Why is Motivation so important in the workplace? Motivation sparks creativity and energy. It encourages people to be more productive. Motivation pushes groups to achieve milestones and complete tasks. Motivation fuels passion in individuals, and can sometimes be the difference between success and failure in the workplace.

Motivation can be the key to long-term productivity gains. Motivated workers get up and do the best possible work each day. Motivated workers are engaged with the activities that make their jobs productive and that keep them from taking short vacations or spending extra time on the couch. Motivated employees are always looking for new ways to increase productivity and are always looking for recognition for their efforts.

Motivation starts with an understanding of what drives individuals to succeed and what drives them away from succeeding. Motivation comes from three sources: intrinsic, extrinsic and personal. Intrinsic motivation comes from recognition, compensation or a reward. Extrinsic motivation is something you get from other people. Personal motivation is something that you do for yourself.

Intrinsic motivation comes from recognition, compensation or a reward for performance. Recognition is important because it helps employees feel positive about themselves and about the work they are doing. Compensation is important if employees feel like they have an adequate return for the effort they put into their jobs. Rewards may be paid in cash, recognition in the workplace, advancement at work or a variety of other things. Employees who are rewarded for good work performance with a bonus, stock option or another form of monetary benefit are considered extrinsic motivators.

Extrinsic motivation is important, but it can take time and a great amount of effort on the part of employees to build up. This is why many companies have employees that excel in one particular area. These employees work the hardest and need the biggest incentives possible to keep them going. If these employees feel their work is not recognized, compensated or rewarded properly they will lose motivation. They will start to look for other avenues to reach their goal. This type of extrinsic motivation is usually short lived and soon yields to a lack of interest in the workplace.

On the other hand, intrinsic motivation is what drives most of us to perform our best every day. It comes from the knowledge that we matter in the big scheme of things. It comes from knowing that our skills and talents are vital to the success of the company and that we are worthy of appreciation. Intrinsic motivation is also the type of motivation that inspires the loyalty and participation of the people who are working with us. These employees know that they are making a difference and that their goals and dreams can be achieved.

There are many ways to motivate employees. From awarding certificates to providing raises to recognition to a raise in pay, there are many rewards to motivate employees. These rewards do not need to be lavish to be effective. Many companies offer employees small gifts like money made from the sales of their products to small efforts like writing a thank you letter to a customer. A simple reward of a day of appreciation for an outstanding performance can go a long way to getting employees motivated.

Recognition is one of the best ways to show employees they are valued and important. Employees should be rewarded for a job well done and recognition should be regularly given and displayed. The workplace should include recognition in various formats. Whether it is an award from a department or an individual deed of distinction for an outstanding performance, recognition is one of the best ways to motivate people and get them to work harder and do a better job.
